The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise from the nation to those who serve or who have served, and their families, which says we will do all we can to ensure they are treated fairly and not disadvantaged in their day-to-day lives. The Armed Forces Covenant relies on the people, communities, and businesses of the UK to actively support it in order to make a difference.

Our government is committed to supporting the Armed Forces community by working with a range of partners who have signed the Armed Forces Covenant. The Covenant brings together the government, businesses, local authorities, charities and the public in order to support those who serve.

Businesses and charitable organisations that wish to demonstrate their support for the Armed Forces community can sign the covenant making a pledge to support in whatever ways they are able. This month, we have had our covenant accepted and our promise of support officially recognised.

At Armourgeddon, we have made a range of written promises, which we will publicise, wherever possible and feasible to set out our support for members of the Armed Forces community who work within our team or come to visit our site.

The level of support a business offers depends on the size and nature of the organisation, but for us, this includes policies that: encourage reserve service and support employment of veterans and service spouses/partners. More than 800 businesses and charities have signed an Armed Forces Covenant, and that number continues to grow. Including us here at Armourgeddon.

Armed Forces personnel and their families make many sacrifices in serving their country. For the serving personnel, ultimately this may mean putting themselves in the way of real and imminent danger; potentially result in injury and often difficulty in integrating back into civilian life.

For families, having to move around the country every few years becomes an accepted norm. This affects children’s schooling, relationships for all members of the family and also on practical matters such as being on NHS waiting lists. Relocating can cause partners’ difficulty in finding viable employment, for getting credit or even mortgage applications accepted.  

In 2010, the Government created and launched the Armed Forces Covenant. Written into law, it says that Armed Forces personnel, veterans or their families will not be disadvantaged by their military life when accessing goods and services, compared to other citizens. Examples of what this means in reality include;

• Help to Buy Schemes for property enabling Armed Forces personnel to get onto or stay on the property ladder when moving around the country or indeed the world.
• Engaging companies- both large and small, in making a range of commitments to Armed Forces personnel such as guaranteed interviews on leaving the Forces.
• A cash fund to help schemes and projects for mental health and injured Services personnel.
• Career development plans and support for the partners of Servicemen and women such as the ‘Dependents’ Business Start Up’ programme based at The University of Wolverhampton.
